SEO · Core skill

On-page SEO

Organic search is the cheapest steady source of traffic, so almost every digital marketing interview checks whether you can research keywords and optimise a page properly.

What is the difference between a title tag and a meta description? Do both affect rankings?Fresher

The title tag is the page's HTML title. Google usually shows it as the clickable blue headline in results, though it may rewrite it, and it is a ranking signal, so put the main keyword near the start and keep it to roughly 50-60 characters so it isn't cut off. The meta description is a short summary that often appears under the title. It isn't a direct ranking factor, but a clear, specific description earns more clicks; about 150-160 characters fits on desktop.

Every page should have its own unique title and description. A common mistake is the same title on every page, such as the brand name alone.

How do you do keyword research for a new page on a website?Fresher

Start with how customers describe the problem, from sales calls, reviews and support questions, then expand those seed terms in a tool such as Google Keyword Planner, Semrush or Ahrefs, plus Google Search Console's queries if the site already exists. For each keyword, look at monthly search volume, difficulty and, most importantly, intent: what the searcher wants.

Long-tail phrases like "spoken English classes for working professionals in Pune" have less volume but convert better. Pick one primary keyword per page and a few related ones, then plan the headings around them. Giving two pages the same main keyword makes them compete with each other, called keyword cannibalisation.

What is search intent? What is the intent behind "best laptop under 50000", and what page would you create for it?1-6 years

Search intent is the reason behind a search. The usual types are informational (learning something), navigational (looking for a specific site), commercial investigation (comparing before buying) and transactional (ready to buy).

"Best laptop under 50000" is commercial investigation: the person hasn't chosen a model yet. So the right page is a comparison or buying guide with a shortlist, key specs side by side, who each laptop suits and links to buy, not a single product page. The quickest check is to search the query yourself: if the top results are all comparison articles, that's what Google has learned searchers want. Matching intent often matters more than adding keywords.

A blog post that ranked on page one has dropped to page three. What do you check?1-6 years

Start in Google Search Console: when did clicks, impressions and position fall, and for which queries? Then check whether anything changed on our side: the URL, title, content, a noindex tag, a canonical pointing elsewhere, robots.txt, or internal links to it removed in a redesign. Use URL Inspection to confirm it's still indexed. Check whether we published a newer page on the same topic that now competes with it.

If nothing changed on our side, compare the date with Google's announced updates and look at what now ranks above us: often fresher, more complete content. The fix is usually to update the post, match the intent better and add internal links from related pages.

Social media · Core skill

Social media content

Executives are expected to plan, create and publish social content every week, and to show that it brings the brand reach, followers and leads, not just likes.

What is a content calendar? How would you plan a month of Instagram posts for a brand?Fresher

A content calendar is a schedule of what goes out, where and when, usually a sheet or a tool like Meta Business Suite, with columns for date, platform, format, topic, caption, creative status, owner and link.

To plan a month, I'd start from the goal, such as more enquiries, then set three or four content pillars, for example tips, behind the scenes, customer stories and offers. I'd mark key dates: festivals, sale days and events relevant to the audience. Then I'd decide the posting frequency and mix of Reels, carousels and Stories, and leave a few gaps for trends. Planning ahead also leaves time for approvals and design.

How do you write a good caption and choose hashtags for an Instagram post?Fresher

The first line matters most, because the rest is hidden behind "more": open with a hook, a question, a bold statement or the main benefit. Then give value or context in short lines, and end with one clear call to action, such as "Save this for later" or "DM us 'demo' to book". Write in the brand's voice and the audience's language; Hinglish works for some brands and not others.

For hashtags, use a few specific, relevant ones about the topic, niche and location rather than generic popular tags. Hashtags matter less for reach than they used to; clear keywords in the caption now also help people find posts through Instagram search.

You have a one-hour webinar recording. How would you turn it into content for Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube?1-6 years

Pick the strongest moments first: a few clear tips, a surprising fact, a good question from the audience. Then adapt each to the platform rather than posting the same thing everywhere. For Instagram, short vertical 9:16 Reels with a hook in the first seconds and on-screen captions, since many people watch muted, plus a carousel summarising the key tips. For LinkedIn, a text post sharing one insight in the speaker's voice, a document carousel, and a short clip. For YouTube, the full recording with a searchable title, chapters and a strong thumbnail, plus the vertical clips as Shorts.

Link everything back to the full video or a sign-up page.

Our Reels get good views but very few follows or website visits. What would you change?1-6 years

First check where the views come from and who is watching. In Instagram's insights, views mostly from non-followers with low profile visits suggest the content entertains but isn't clearly linked to the brand or relevant to buyers. Look at watch time, shares, saves and follows per Reel to see which ones did convert.

Then adjust: make content for the actual target customer, tie the hook to the problem we solve, build a recognisable series so people follow for the next part, add a clear call to action, and make the profile convincing with a clear bio, highlights and a tagged link. Measure clicks with UTM tags on the bio and Story links.

Analytics · Core skill

Google Analytics

Every campaign has to be measured, and Google Analytics 4 is the standard tool, so interviewers test events, conversions, traffic sources and UTM tagging in detail.

What is an event in GA4, and how is GA4's data model different from Universal Analytics?Fresher

In GA4 everything is an event: a page view, a scroll, a click, a form submission or a purchase, each with parameters giving details such as the page or the value. Universal Analytics was built around sessions and hit types, with events described by category, action and label. Universal Analytics stopped processing data in July 2023 (July 2024 for paid 360 properties), so GA4 is what you'll use.

GA4 events come in four groups: automatically collected (first_visit, session_start), enhanced measurement, switched on in the data stream (page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, file downloads, form interactions), recommended events with names Google defines (sign_up, generate_lead, purchase), and custom events.

What are UTM parameters? Build a UTM link for an Instagram Story promoting a Diwali sale.Fresher

UTM parameters are tags added to a link so GA4 knows where a visit came from. The main ones are utm_source (the site, such as instagram), utm_medium (the type, such as social or email), utm_campaign (the campaign name), and optionally utm_content (which ad or post) and utm_term (the keyword).

Example: https://example.com/diwali-sale?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=diwali_sale&utm_content=story_1. For paid ads use a medium such as paid_social or cpc so GA4 puts the traffic in a paid channel. Keep names lowercase and consistent, since GA4 treats "Instagram" and "instagram" as different sources, and never tag links between pages of your own site.

How would you track lead form submissions as a conversion in GA4?1-6 years

First send an event when a form is successfully submitted. If the form leads to a thank-you page, I can create a generate_lead event in GA4 based on page_view where the page location contains /thank-you. Otherwise I'd use Google Tag Manager with a trigger on the form's success message or submission, firing a GA4 event tag. Then mark the event as a key event in the GA4 admin; key events are what GA4 used to call conversions.

Test it with Tag Assistant and DebugView before trusting it, and check Realtime. Standard reports can take a day or two to show the data. If you run Google Ads, import the key event there for bidding.

In GA4, Direct and Unassigned traffic suddenly jump while campaign traffic looks lower. What could be wrong?1-6 years

Usually the source information is being lost. Check the campaign links first: missing or broken UTM tags, or a redirect that drops the parameters. Links opened from WhatsApp, some email apps and other apps often arrive without a referrer and show as Direct unless they're tagged. Non-standard utm_medium values can put traffic in Unassigned. A payment gateway or second domain without cross-domain tracking can start new sessions; add such domains to the list of unwanted referrals.

Also check consent settings and whether the tag still fires on every page. A free-form exploration by session source/medium and landing page, compared before and after the change date, usually shows which campaign broke.

Paid ads

Meta ads

Facebook and Instagram ads are the main paid channel for many Indian brands and agencies, so executives are expected to set up, track and scale Meta campaigns.

What campaign objectives does Meta Ads Manager offer, and how do you choose one?Fresher

Meta has six objectives: Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. Choose by the business result you want, because Meta's delivery system finds people likely to take the action you optimise for.

A coaching institute wanting enquiries should use Leads, with an instant form or a website form tracked by the pixel. An online store should use Sales, optimising for purchases. Awareness suits a new brand that wants reach at a low cost. A common mistake is running Traffic when you want sales: Meta will find people who click, not people who buy. Mention that tracking must be set up before a Sales or website Leads campaign can optimise properly.

What is the Meta pixel, and why do advertisers also set up the Conversions API?1-6 years

The Meta pixel is code on the website that sends events such as PageView, ViewContent, AddToCart, Lead and Purchase back to Meta. Meta uses them to report results, optimise delivery towards people likely to convert, and build audiences like website visitors for retargeting.

Browser privacy features, ad blockers and Apple's App Tracking Transparency mean the pixel misses some events. The Conversions API sends the same events from the website's server, so more of them reach Meta. Use both, with the same event name and event ID so Meta can deduplicate them and doesn't count a purchase twice. Check in Events Manager with Test Events and watch the Event Match Quality score.

A Meta campaign gets leads at a good cost on ₹500 a day. How would you scale it to ₹5,000 a day without the cost per lead shooting up?1-6 years

Scale in steps, not in one jump. A big budget change can send the ad set back into the learning phase, which needs about 50 optimisation events in a week to settle, so raise the budget gradually, a commonly used rule of thumb being around 20% every few days, while watching cost per lead.

Alongside that, scale horizontally: test new ad sets with broader targeting, Advantage+ audience, or a lookalike audience built from people who became real customers. Add fresh creatives regularly, because as frequency rises the same ads tire and costs climb. Track lead quality with the sales team too, since cheap leads that never answer the phone aren't a win.

AI tools at work

Using AI tools safely at work

Marketing teams now draft captions, ad copy and reports with AI every day, so interviewers check that you use it to work faster while protecting accuracy, brand voice and customer data.

Which digital marketing tasks would you use AI tools for, and which would you keep for yourself?Fresher

AI is useful for first drafts and variations: several caption or ad copy options to test, blog outlines, grouping a long keyword list by topic, ideas for a content calendar, and summarising a month's campaign data into talking points. It saves hours on repetitive writing.

I'd keep for myself the decisions and anything that could harm the brand: the strategy, final approval of every post, product claims, prices and offers, statistics, and replies to complaints. AI tools can invent facts and slip off the brand's voice, so I check every output against the brief and the brand guidelines before it goes live, and I follow the company's rules on which tools are allowed.

Write the prompt you'd use to get ad copy variations for a Meta lead campaign for a coaching institute.1-6 years

Give it the context and the limits: "Write 5 Meta ad variations for [institute], which offers [course] for [audience] in [city]. Main benefit: [benefit]; offer: [free demo class]. Each variation should use a different angle: career outcome, flexible timing, results of past students, fees, trust. For each, give primary text under 125 characters and a headline under 40. Friendly, simple English. Don't promise guaranteed jobs or marks, and don't address the reader's personal circumstances directly."

The last line matters: Meta's ad policies reject claims that imply knowledge of personal attributes, like "Are you unemployed?". I'd check every variation for accuracy and policy before testing them.

Your manager suggests uploading the full customer list to a free AI tool to segment it. What do you say?1-6 years

I'd raise the risk politely and suggest a safer route. A customer list with names, phone numbers and emails is personal data; under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and the company's own policy, we shouldn't send it to a tool we haven't approved, and free tools may store or learn from what we upload.

Alternatives: use the company's approved, enterprise AI tool if there is one; remove personal details and work only with IDs and behaviour, such as order count and last purchase date; or segment it ourselves in Excel, the CRM or GA4 audiences. That gets the result without putting customers' data, or the company, at risk.

Every job

HR and behavioural round

Digital marketing roles are hands-on and deadline-heavy, so the HR round looks for real campaigns you've run, how you learn as platforms change and how you handle client pressure.

Tell me about yourself.Fresher

Lead with what you've actually done in marketing, even if it's your own project. "I'm a [BBA / B.Com / engineering] graduate from [college] and I've been learning digital marketing for the past [year]. I completed the [Google Analytics certification / Meta Blueprint course] and, to practise, I run [an Instagram page / a blog] about [topic], which grew to [number] followers with [Reels / SEO articles]. In my internship at [agency] I [scheduled posts, made UTM links, prepared weekly reports]. I'm now looking for an executive role where I can [handle SEO and social for clients]."

Numbers from your own page are more convincing than a list of certificates.

Digital marketing changes every few months. How do you keep up?Fresher

Name specific habits and show you test what you learn. "I follow the official sources first, Google Search Central's blog for search updates and Meta's business announcements for ads, plus [one or two newsletters or podcasts]. When something changes, I try it on my own page or a small budget before recommending it. For example, when [platform feature] launched, I tested it on [page] and saw [result]."

Avoid saying you just follow influencers. Interviewers like candidates who check official sources and evidence before jumping on every trend.

How would you manage several client accounts at once, especially during the festive season?Fresher

Show that you plan ahead and stay organised. "I'd keep one calendar for all clients with every post, campaign and deadline, and plan festive content four to six weeks ahead so designs and approvals aren't rushed. Each morning I'd check ad spend and anything urgent first, then work through scheduled tasks in priority order. If two deadlines clash, I'd tell my manager early rather than miss one quietly."

Add an example if you have one: "During my internship I handled posts for [three] clients during Diwali using a shared tracker, and we didn't miss a scheduled post."

Tell me about a campaign that didn't perform as expected. What did you do?1-6 years

Pick a real one and show you diagnosed it with data. Use STAR: "We ran a Meta lead campaign for [client] with a target of ₹[x] per lead, and in the first week it was double that (situation). I had to fix it without extra budget (task). I checked the breakdown and found one audience and two creatives using most of the spend with poor results. I paused them, tested three new hooks, and shortened the lead form (action). By week three the cost per lead was [result], and lead quality, checked with the sales team, improved."

End with the lesson, such as testing creatives earlier.

A client expects SEO to bring them leads within two weeks. How do you handle it?1-6 years

Set honest expectations without losing the client. Explain that SEO usually takes months to show steady results, because pages need to be crawled, improved and earn trust, and that no one can guarantee rankings. Then give them a plan with early milestones they can see: technical fixes in the first weeks, new and updated pages next, and monthly reports on impressions, rankings and enquiries from organic traffic.

If they need leads now, suggest a short paid campaign alongside SEO. "I'd rather promise you what's realistic and over-deliver than promise first page in two weeks."
